One of our brothers was going through a tough time—career changes, relationship struggles, and an overwhelming pace of life.
Instead of heading to a noisy bar, we decided to find a quiet spot where we could enjoy a good meal and talk things out.
That’s how we ended up at this warm and gentle Japanese restaurant—Umenohana.
What is Umenohana?
Umenohana, meaning “Plum Blossom,” was born in Fukuoka, Japan, and has been serving delicate tofu and yuba (tofu skin) dishes since 1976.
Now with over 70 branches across Japan, it has also found its way to Bangkok—tucked quietly on the second floor of Nihonmura Mall in Thonglor 13.
Recommended Highlights
Vegetarian Options
Beyond their traditional tofu hotpots, they offer fully plant-based dishes—no meat, no fish. Thoughtful and wholesome.
Yuba & Tofu Specialties
Handmade yuba and both chilled and warm tofu dishes are a must-try. The soybean aroma is delicate, and the textures are soft and silky.
Kaiseki Set Menus
Multi-course meals crafted with seasonal ingredients—beautifully presented and thoughtfully paced. A graceful showcase of Japanese hospitality.
Tobiume Zen|A Gentle Meal, Like a Reassuring Conversation

I chose one of their signature sets—the Tobiume Zen.
This meal feels like the soul of Umenohana, with a thoughtful mix of dishes that include:
A light appetizer (I think?)

Followed by five pieces of nigiri sushi

King crab legs

A variety of side dishes…

Heavenly wagyu rice bowl on the side

Nothing was overpowering; each bite was like a quiet voice telling you, “You’re doing okay. Take your time.”
Service & Atmosphere
Great for families or gatherings:
Perfect for parents with kids, vegetarians, couples, and anyone who appreciates a peaceful dining space.

Authentic Japanese hospitality:
Staff are attentive and professional. They offer gentle suggestions on how to enjoy each dish and set a comforting dining rhythm.

Cozy and elegant interiors:
Blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with a touch of modern design, the space offers private rooms and large tables—ideal for dates, business meetings, or family dinners.

We took our time. Bite after bite, we opened up to one another about the things we usually kept hidden. Maybe it was the quiet space that helped us lower our guard, or maybe the tenderness of the meal itself became the comfort we needed. There was no alcohol that night, but somehow it gave us more strength than any drink ever could.
Closing|When Life Feels a Little Bitter, Let Umenohana Feed You Gently
Umenohana doesn’t try to impress with bold flavors or flashy presentation. Instead, it gently walks beside you with every dish, helping you sort through the mess in your heart. The Tobiume Zen felt like a comforting therapy session at the dinner table—each bite full of warmth and quiet understanding. Perfect for the days when you just need to be listened to.
