This time, I brought my parents and younger brother to Kanchanaburi for a few days, but we did not fill the schedule too tightly. As we grow older, we begin to understand that a journey does not need too many stops—it only needs to feel just right. After checking in at the hotel, we happened to have a free afternoon, so I suggested driving to Srinagarind Dam for a quiet walk.
Srinagarind Dam is located in the northwestern part of Kanchanaburi. It is one of Thailand’s major dams and also one of the area’s larger attractions. The drive from central Kanchanaburi takes around one and a half hours. From the River Kwai Bridge, the distance is approximately 70 kilometres. Along the way, mountain roads and reservoir views gradually unfold, while the scenery outside the window becomes a wider landscape of blue and green.
The Moment We Arrived at Srinagarind Dam
As the car reached the top of the dam, the view suddenly opened up before us. The reservoir looked like a calm lake stretching toward the distant mountains. The wind was stronger than in the city, and the air felt much cleaner. That sense of openness makes you want to simply stand there and let your thoughts drift.
After getting out of the car, my parents did not say much. They simply stood quietly and looked across the water. I suddenly realised that it had been a long time since we had travelled together in such a simple way. No one was rushing, and no one was replying to work messages. We were simply standing beside the dam, looking at the same view together.

My younger brother stood nearby taking photographs, my father leaned against the railing and looked into the distance, while my mother asked me, “How deep is the water?” It was such an ordinary conversation, yet it made the moment feel comforting and real.
At a certain stage in life, you begin to realise that the destination itself is no longer the most important part. What matters is who is standing there with you.

On the drive back, I suddenly remembered that the last time our whole family travelled together was several years ago, before we had been settled in Thailand for so long. Back then, we did not have as much grey hair as we do now, and life did not seem to carry quite so many concerns.
The surface of Srinagarind Dam turned golden beneath the evening light. As I looked at my parents from behind, I felt a warmth that was difficult to put into words. I realised that the most precious part of travel is not checking in at famous places, but these quiet moments of standing together before a beautiful view.
Kanchanaburi has many famous attractions, but for me, this visit to Srinagarind Dam felt more like an afternoon spent rediscovering a piece of our past.
